5 habits that can ruin your teeth

It is a well known fact that brushing and flossing your teeth can protect it and keep your teeth and gums healthy. However, there could still be some daily food habits or activities that could potentially ruin your teeth and gums in the long run. In this post, we will look at 5 habits that can ruin your teeth.

1. Drinking cool drinks

Cool drinks may be quite delicious to consume, but those beverages are loaded with sugar that leave a coat of acid on your teeth. In fact, an 8 ounce can of pepsi contains 27 grams of sugar. If you’re feeling overly thirsty then always drink water. It is a calorie-free and healthiest option available that will protect your overall health.

2. Chewing on ice

Some people can’t resist the urge to chew on ice. Since it’s sugar-free, you might think it’s harmless. But you would be wrong. While ice in itself isn’t unhealthy, the act of chewing on ice could result in you chipping your tooth and can even irritate the soft tissues inside your teeth. This is due to the fact that ice is quite hard to bite on. However, if you have the urge to chew on something, then chew some gum. This could help you resist the urge to chew on ice.

3. Playing contact sports without a mouth guard

Playing any sort of contact sports like hockey or boxing without a mouth guard could potentially result in a broken tooth. A hard blow to the mouth is all it will take to make your teeth go flying. Therefore, it is always advisable to use a mouth guard while playing any type of contact sport even if you’re just playing for leisure and you’re not a professional athlete.

4. Opening stuff with your teeth

Let’s face it! Many of us are guilty of this. We just can’t seem to resist the urge to open a resilient package using our teeth. But using our teeth as a tool to open packages or anything else could result in a chipped tooth. Instead, keep a scissors or knife nearby when you’re trying to open a package. This could save you an emergency trip to the dentist.

5. Brushing too hard

Yes, you’ve heard it right! Brushing too hard can be harmful to your teeth. Before you decide to stop brushing entirely, just hear me out. Using bristles that are too hard or brushing aggressively can damage your teeth and irritate your gums. Therefore, when buying a new toothbrush, choose a brush with the right bristles for your gums. If you don’t know what type of toothbrush to use, then please ask your dentist. Remember, when brushing to gently massage your teeth and gums with your toothbrush.
